Partners

Links between institutions in Montpellier and Africa go back a long way. The result is a dense network of collaborations taking many forms. In terms of research, in addition to the many ongoing partnership projects, structuring schemes have been set up in long-term partnership. For example, CIRAD and its African partners are involved in 13 research and training partnerships in Africa, each of which brings together several national and even international organizations in the regions where they are based. IRD has co-constructed and co-directs 25 Laboratoires Mixtes Internationaux with institutions in African countries, and is supporting the emergence or strengthening of more than 32 research teams in Africa via a “Jeunes équipes associées à l’IRD” program. Three of the five ANRS-Infectious and Emerging Diseases research sites in Africa are co-coordinated by Montpellier-based teams active in Senegal, Cameroon and Burkina Faso.

In terms of training, the Montpellier university site welcomes over 5,000 African students every year. Institutes such as the Institut des Régions Chaudes (part of the Institut Agro – Montpellier SupAgro) and the Institut Agronomique Méditerranéen de Montpellier, one of the five training centers of the CIHEAM intergovernmental organization, specialize in training and expertise in sustainable agricultural and agrifood development issues in Mediterranean and tropical countries. Montpellier’s entire scientific ecosystem is also mobilized to strengthen the capacities of African institutional players in research, higher education and vocational training, in conjunction with international institutions such as the CGIAR, whose world headquarters are located in Montpellier.
